    Threonine

Threonine (2-Amino-3-hydroxybutanoic acid) is a polar, alpha-amino acid with a hydroxyl side chain. Threonine is one of the proteinogenic amino acids. It is an essential amino acid in humans and acts as a precursor for glycine biosynthesis.

Industrial production of threonine is achieved by fermentation using genetically engineered E. coli.

Threonine is a crucial amino acid for intestinal health as it aids intestinal mucin biosynthesis and confers protection from intestinal damage. Threonine exhibits an anti-obesity effect by decreasing lipogenesis and increasing lipolysis in obesity-induced mice.

As a feed additive, threonine is added to meet the amino acid requirement of livestock and helps to improve their weight. Processing soybean meal to increase the protein digestibility for better threonine absorption is recommended for its use as a feed additive.

Generally, threonine is present in significant amount in all seaweeds.
