    Histidine

Histidine is a polar, alpha-amino acid with an imidazole functional group. Being an essential amino acid, it serves many important physiological roles in humans by acting as a precursor for the biosynthesis of histamine and carnosine. As one of the constituents in vaccine formulation and purification tags for recombinant protein, histidine holds significant pharmaceutical importance. Histidine administration is promising for the clinical management of dermatitis and obesity. Additionally, histidine supplementation has been shown to help people with an eating disorder or memory loss. In cosmetic formulations, histidine act as a skin conditioning agent.

Histidine has been used as a feed supplement for improving the meat quality of pigs and hens and increase milk production by ruminants. Soy protein is known to be a rich source of histidine.

Protein extracted from red algae, Palmaria species, has a high amount of essential amino acids including histidine.
