    Fucoxanthin

Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid pigment that results in the distinct brown colour of brown seaweeds and some diatoms. Structurally, it is an allenic xanthophyll consisting of epoxide and conjugated carbonyl groups.

Brown algae Sargassum japonicum, Sargassum hornei and marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum are excellent sources for fucoxanthin extraction.

Fucoxanthin plays a crucial role in the light-capturing process during photosynthesis. The presence of an allenic bond in the molecular structure imparts various interesting biological activities to fucoxanthin.

Fucoxanthin is a promising nutraceutical agent owing to its antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and anti-obese properties. It also exhibits antimalarial activity, hepatoprotective, osteoprotective and ocular protective effects revealing its therapeutic applications. Additionally, it possesses a skin protective effect from UV irradiation that makes it a potential cosmetic ingredient.
